The California Quail can be seen as far north as Vancouver Island in Canada.  In fact, they are regular visitors to our garden and I often get a front row view from my studio window.  The male assumes a look-out position on a fence or roof-top to enable him to warn his mate and young ones of possible danger while they are foraging for seeds on the ground.

Inspired by the forests of Vancouver Island and the life hidden within, especially birds, this Oil Pastel represents love. Valentine’s Day was approaching, and I thought about love, in this case, the love of Nature.

I was walking through the electronics department of Sears one day where row upon row of new TV’s pulsed with waves of light, on and off, flickering and rolling in what seemed to me a predictable pattern. Some banners and ribbons were hanging about adding to the picture. A Sale, I thought ! The scene reminded me of a living breathing thing with a master switch, a Heart, co-ordinating the action. And so, later on at home, with that energetic scene in my mind, I created this Oil Pastel in an abstract impressionistic style and called it “Heartbeat”.

This watercolor painting was done in the Tropical Pavilion of the Muttart Conservatory. Blue Ginger grows about a meter or so high, with tall spikes of Blue Flowers and long rippling leaves. It’s exotic appearance caught my eye.

Calgary is situated in the southern part of the Canadian province of Alberta.  Here the land is semi-arid rolling grassland but Calgarians do like to swim and boat and enjoy their water views.  They have built several man-made lakes within the city, one of which is Sikome Lake in Fish Creek Park.

The inspiration for this little sketch/drawing came from the discovery of a dried flower arrangement in a rental property where I stayed for a short time. Put together by someone else, there it sat, right on the dining room table, an inviting little work of art. So, of course, I had to make a visual record of it.

“A Quiet Moment” is one of my favorites from my sketch book. I spent some time in a vacation rental property near here while some house renovations were being done. I used one of the living room chairs as a starting point and then added a woman sitting comfortably. Beside her is a small table with a cup of tea and a potted daffodil. Behind her I added some photographs on the wall and a window displaying a collection of vases. It shows a moment of peace and reflection.

Sometimes, while sitting in my studio leafing thru my sketchbook, a memory comes to me. That was the case with “Skagit Valley Memory”. I have travelled to Washington State only once to see the tulips in spring but the rows of tulips with towering trees and farm houses in the distance made a lasting impression on me.
